Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher

The German landscape and marine painter Karl Paul Themistokles von Eckenbrecher was born in 1842 in Athens. As the son of a naval officer, he grew up at various locations, including Athens, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Constantinople and Potsdam. In Düsseldorf, he received private lessons in painting by the famous landscape painter Oswald Achenbach, who influenced him deeply. Eckenbrecher traveled to many parts of Europe, especially Norway, and the Middle East as well as Africa and the Philippines.
