Hugh Strange Architects

The house is sited in an old pub yard, largely concealed from the street outside by an existing brick perimeter wall. It is small, low budget and inhabits an unpromising site yet carefully uses the materials and existing site conditions to create a generous and beautiful new home. The house is structured with solid spruce panels fabricated in a Swiss factory and erected on site in a week. The windows, doors and internal fit-out are of FSC tropical hardwood from Nicaragua, felled by Hurricane Felix. The house was completed in 2010 and has been internationally published and has won awards from the RIBA, AIA and the Wood Awards. In 2013 the studio extension that houses Hugh Strange Architect’s office was built adjacent to the house, also constructed in cross-laminated structural timber and tropical hardwood.
