Alter Leipziger Bahnhof/Dresden

2016

As being a growing city in the east of Germany, Dresden needs to activate its inner city fallows. The area of the „Alter Leipziger Bahnhof“ is a well connected site, located right next to the city center. Old buildings, some of them almost completely ruined, testify to a time when it used to be the starting point of Germany‘s first long-distance railway in 1830. While real estate companies and city planners are heading for an urban crisis including social segregation und architectural uniformity, big parts of the urban society have a different approach to living and working. They look for affordable space which is flexible but also provides a certin character to identify with. It is possible to find a different way of urban atmosphere within the strong structure and remaining buildings of the former train station. This project makes a proposal how to reclaim the unused buildings and densify the area with new building types. The „Alter Leipziger Bahnhof“ can be an urban area with an own identity in the same pioneering spirit the railway used to have in the 19th century.
